Countdown reveals parents' biggest home safety concerns
Published: 10-05-2010
The results of a new poll have unveiled the biggest concerns faced by parents across the country when it comes to protecting children from home safety hazards.
Research was conducted by the child safety experts at Clippasafe, who questioned over 700 mums, dads and customers about their worries.
The full top five is as follows:
1. Falling down the stairs (27%)
2. Burns from ovens and hobs (21%)
3. Scalding caused by hot bath water (17%)
4. Potential poisoning from medication and cleaning equipment (16%)
5. The dangers presented by plug sockets and electrical equipment in general (12%)
"It's no surprise that a fall down the stairs was in top position," commented Roger Cheetham, managing director of Clippasafe. "On average around 41,000 under fives visit A&E each year in the UK after tumbling down a flight of stairs*, so it is a very realistic concern."
Other worries that were mentioned by parents include: falls from open windows, the risk of burns and scalds from a hot radiator and knocks to the head caused by sharp edges and corners.
"There's a lot to remember when you have a new child," continued Roger. "We conducted this survey to offer a helping hand by making potential dangers more evident, helping to create a safer home environment for everyone."
The results have prompted the company to develop the Clippasafe House, designed to highlight potential danger areas in the average home and offer solutions.
"We hope that the Clippasafe House will be an invaluable tool for parents and mums and dads-to-be," added Roger. "We've created an interactive version for our website to make sure everyone is aware of home safety issues and to eliminate some of the evident fears that have come out of the research."
